Choices in Your 30s: Surviving Bay Area Mom Life + 3 Spring Favorites

The choices in your 30s hit different, especially when you’re raising a family in the Bay Area. Heading into my late 30s and reflecting on the last handful of years, I’m just shocked by how hard I’ve had to fight to stay somewhere I actually want to live.

You know the kind of place … where six figures somehow still doesn’t feel like enough, where traffic is a daily personality trait, and where there’s always, always, ALWAYS more work to do. Somewhere in the last few years, deep in my postpartum fog, I started questioning the number of hours I work to maintain a lifestyle in such a chaotic place, for a future I don’t even know how to explain to my kids. That’s the thing about the choices in your 30s — they look small until you realize they’re shaping the next decade.

Is anyone else here in this mind space? Please tell me I’m not the only one.

The Bay Area is a fascinating place. I grew up here during simpler times, in a much more sheltered environment. It was before the full-fledged Silicon Valley boom, before 60-hour workweeks were normal, and back when childcare didn’t cost as much as a mortgage. Somehow along the way, this place changed. And yet, somehow, I still love it. Maybe it’s the newness mixed with little hints of nostalgia tucked into every corner.

The choices in your 30s are no joke — especially the big ones. Do you stay? Do you go? Do you keep grinding? Do you give your kids the kind of childhood you had — or are you already too deep in this beautiful, chaotic place to leave? I don’t have the answers (sorry!), but I do think there’s something powerful about admitting we’re all kind of just figuring it out together.

So yes — we work too hard, it’s too expensive, and the future feels like one big question mark. But while we’re sorting through it all, here are three of my favorite finds this week now that spring has finally sprung and the weather is just begging us to be outside. We’re mid way through the week so it’s definitely time to start thinking about what to do on the weekend. I hope you give these a try.

Choices in Your 30s: 3 Bay Area Spring Favorites That Saved My Sanity

Coyote Hills Regional Park — This is hands-down one of the easiest hikes for toddlers in the Bay Area. I love that little ones can just run wild without me having a heart attack at every bend. There’s barely any elevation, the trail is smooth for little feet, and the views of the marshlands feel like a tiny vacation from city life.

Izumi Cakes — A brand new find for me — and I am so here for it. I’ve been on a slow, delicious mission to track down the best Asian “not too sweet” cakes, and this one is genuinely good. I grabbed the yuzu matcha flavor and it tasted like the perfect introduction to spring: fresh, simple, and just the right amount of new. Highly recommend pairing with an iced tea and 30 minutes of peace.

Mumm Napa — Okay, this one is a tiny stretch, but if you’re already in the Bay Area, please remember Napa is just a quick hour drive away. Mumm Napa is my happy place — the outdoor terrace is gorgeous, the bubbles are bubbly, and the vibe whispers “you deserve this.” If you can swing a kid-free (or kid-included, I won’t judge) day trip, this is the perfect way to forget about your hectic to-do list for a hot second.

If you’re in the Bay Area and looking for a few simple ways to take your mind off the constant stressors of raising a family here, take a breath, take a break, and check out a few of these spots. They’ve genuinely helped me cope with the choices in your 30s when everything feels like too much. We’re all in this beautifully expensive, slightly bonkers place together — the least we can do is enjoy a slice of cake, a marshland trail, and a glass of bubbles along the way. I hope you love them as much as I do.

And if you’re also navigating the choices that come with your 30s in the Bay Area — the work, the cost, the kids, the questions — drop a comment and tell me what’s keeping you sane right now. I’d love to hear it.
