A few weeks ago, we finally checked out Katsu Gin Milpitas — and I am so glad we did.

The Drive to Milpitas (a.k.a. The Toddler Gamble)

Milpitas is not a terrible drive for us, something like 25 minutes, but it’s definitely a place we need to plan out our trip. All it takes is a heavy blow out or meltdown and we’re looking for a u-turn on the road. If you’re a parent, you know exactly the math I’m doing in my head every time we pull onto the freeway.

But I had been craving curry and katsu for weeks, and when I saw Katsu Gin pop up in my feed, I knew we had to make the trip. Sometimes a craving is louder than the logistics.

Katsu Gin is a Japanese curry and katsu spot tucked into a quiet strip mall in Milpitas. And honestly? I love a great strip mall. That just means there will likely be easy parking, and I don’t have to worry about the kids running into the street. Strip mall moms, you get me.

I also loved that the space inside was easy and roomy. Don’t you hate it when the seats are crowded and you’re the weirdo with the giant double stroller blocking the aisle? There was plenty of room here to park the chaos and actually relax for a minute — which, with toddlers, is basically the holy grail of eating out.

So How Was the Food?

It was a winner for the kids, and in my book, that’s all that matters.

We ordered the tonkatsu curry and the ebi udon curry, and both were solid. I loved how light and crispy the fry was on the tonkatsu and ebi — not greasy, not heavy, just that perfect golden crunch. The curry itself was rich and comforting without being overwhelmingly spicy, which made it easy to share little bites with the kids.

The food also came out at the perfect temperature, which is such a must with kids. You know how sometimes you get fried food and it’s WAY too hot to even think about handing to a toddler? Not an issue here. I didn’t have to do the frantic mom blow-and-cut routine, which felt like its own little miracle.

The portions were also pretty big. We found ourselves taking half home, which meant dinner later that night was also covered. Two meals for the price of one? That’s a mom math win.

One Tiny Heads Up

My only negative? Because we were the very first to arrive at 11 a.m., it did take a little time for the kitchen to warm up (cue: Daniel Tiger on the iPad and a small pile of goldfish crackers to bridge the gap). If you’re coming with little ones, I’d honestly recommend aiming for 11:30 instead — you’ll still beat the lunch rush but skip the warm-up wait.

Other than that, we had an easygoing lunch — and sometimes, easygoing is all you can ask for.
